Places to Hunt, Shoot & Fish

There are many places to go hunting, shooting and fishing all within an easy drive from State Highway 1.

Hunting is encouraged by Department of Conservation in Tararua Forest Park to help control deer, goats, pigs and possums which harm native plants and wildlife. Hunting may be undertaken in designated hunting areas in the Akatarawa Forest Park if you have a permit from Greater Wellington Regional Council. Ph 04 384 5708.

Fishing is possible on our Manawatu, Ohau, Otaki and Waikanae Rivers. Licences for fishing and game bird shooting are available from Fish and Game New Zealand. Our coastal location provides many marine fishing, boating, sailing and water sport opportunities from Himatangi in the north to Paekakariki in the south.

Licences are not required for sea fishing. For information on catch limits visit any fishing tackle store. Fishing is prohibited in the Kapiti Marine Reserve - for more information visit an i-SITE or check the signs displayed at boat launching areas.
