Murrayfield is countryside charm with a café that serves today's menu and a unique museum offering visitors a chance to step into the pioneering world of yesteryears.
Located between Wellington and Palmerston North, close to the smaller Nature Coast townships of Kapiti Horowhenua, the 17-acre site with rolling hills and gardens is a relaxing stop for the traveller and a convenient meeting place for friends and families to catch up. And it's a haven for children.
"There's plenty to do: feed Charlotte the Kunekune pig, and the goats, lambs, chickens and ducks. The Clydesdales will fascinate them. Or they can just run around and have fun," says owner Adelle Brunton.
The 160 seat café and garden attract celebratory gatherings like weddings and birthdays. "The Nature Coast region is Wellington's food basket so we serve only what's fresh," she adds. Vegetarian, gluten free, weight watchers or children's meals - the conscientious kitchen staff have the right menu for you.
Don't forget their signature dish, the plum and raspberry shortcake. Smack your lips but don't ask Adelle for the recipe. "Cuisine Magazine wanted to know. I said no way. You need to keep some secrets," says Adelle.
Relax with a cuppa (the coffee is outstanding) and watch your well-fed children play and interact with the animals. Or take time to step into the museum, a favourite with the senior citizens on bus tours. The barn gives you a delightful insight into life in the pioneering days - from the blokes' tool shed to wedding dresses, and what they used to call the General Store. It's all there.
A highlight of the museum is Helenstown. A miniature township of historic buildings made out of cardboard. "You have to see it to believe it, and creator Helen Pratt is available by appointment to give you a guided tour," says Adelle.
