It's an unlikely winery venue - in a semi-industrial part of Paraparumu. But from outside the tasting room you can sneak a look at Kapiti Island and turn around and see the Tararua Ranges. It's also the slower pace of life and smaller community vibe that holds the Kings here.  "You can walk places and look into people's gardens. And out my front door I can see from the hills to the sea."

 "For people from Wellington who had childhood holidays here, it's a great place to return to. You can turn off the highway and you're at the beach. And there's sun here right till the end of the day; it's so open."

Their fruit wine has the same alcohol content as grape wine but fruit wine lends itself to more combinations with other ingredients like ginger, spices, and other fruit. "We don't just stick to the traditional way of making fruit wine," says Barbara. "We'd like to think we're innovators with the way we combine flavours." Flavours available are feijoa, apple, feijoa and ginger, grapefruit, and strawberry and rhubarb. 

Unwined did well at the Kapiti food fair - customers like drinking local produce and only complain that the feijoa wine is far too good and is drunk quicker than planned. They are now well and truly in the food and beverage basket of the Nature Coast.
