Sleeping & Eating
Our location just one hour north of Wellington on State Highway 1 with good road and train services means we are an easy place to stop and stay for a few days.
The region specialises in relaxed and comfortable accommodation. There are interesting places to stay, including Kapiti Island, local farms or beside the sea and rivers. There are seaside baches, country and river cottages, self-contained holiday homes, hosted bed and breakfasts, backpackers, holiday parks, hotels, motels and apartments – all within a reasonable price range. It's best to book ahead, but you'll usually find somewhere at the last minute, too. We also have a number of affordable accommodation options for families and large groups of over 100 people.
Freedom camping: Self-contained campervans with on-board toilets and wastewater collection systems are permitted on a limited number of council-owned sites. Approved sites are signposted. Campers must take out whatever they take in. For information contact the i-SITE offices.
Tents and vehicles which are not self-contained are welcome at holiday parks and camping grounds.
Eating: Wherever you go in our region, there's something good to eat: from real fruit ice-creams to mouth wateringly fresh seafood, and award-winning local wine, beer and sausages. Our rich soils produce everything from fruit and summer berries to organic vegetables, free-range eggs and meats. Many migrants have made their home here and this is reflected in our diverse ethnic cafes and restaurants. Indian, Chinese, Thai, Cambodian, Swiss, Romanian, Middle Eastern and Kiwi... we have food from around the world. The service is casual and friendly, and there are takeaway outlets and cafes on State Highway 1 and at most beach villages.
