It's Coast Time
Vista del Sol is the only full day spa facility in the region with accommodation. In-house guests enjoy the luxurious Pacific-themed indoor spa pool with ensuite, and spa and beauty treatments - manicures, pedicures, facials, and body wraps - all by an internationally qualified beauty and spa aesthetician, and all using exquisite, international product ranges from Pacific-inspired treatments to the luxury of exclusive European products.
Inside, each antique and original art work has been chosen carefully: a 1680 chest of draws in the sitting room; a watercolour by Tony Lewis; and an unusual Macintyre. This B&B has perfected what can be a fine balance; a private luxury home for others. The rooms are privately intimate yet the house has a warm, open feel. And the gardens are a lovely place to meander and gather your thoughts.
Owners, Mike and Lynette Slee, are no strangers to success and the need for relaxation. Mike is a successful international recruitment specialist, and Lynette was the first woman to qualify as a civil building engineer in South Africa. They moved to the Nature Coast five years ago, "wanting a change in lifestyle for the future," says Mike.
They soon redeveloped their 15 acre property and home to a luxury bed and breakfast and spa. Welcoming people into their home is something they have been doing unofficially for years. Some of their clientele are new arrivals to New Zealand, here to start a new life. Other guests are people wanting some real time to themselves, especially away from the flurry of the city.
Here we have real neighbours and real community, people who help and look out for each other; "on one of our fishing trips we caught 27 snapper - too many to eat ourselves," says Mike. "We rung the neighbours and had a fantastic fish and chip night here. That wouldn't happen often in the city."
Lynette says the key to providing a wonderful place to stay is about the personal touches and personal details. "That's what gives a house soul," she says. And she knows what she's talking about - in South Africa, Lynette won House Designer of the Year, three times.
Guests immediately feel calm and relaxed when they stay at Vista del Sol. The view of the sun, the native birds, the spa offerings and touches of luxury - it's really a haven for those needing to relax. "Some people are just plain tuckered out," says Mike. "They truly need a rest.
Mike regards the whole day on the Nature Coast as relaxing yet energising - from the inspiring dawns over the Tararua Mountain Ranges opening with bird life's morning chorus, then warm and enjoyable days, to the spectacular and relaxing sunsets with the final calls of the Tui, and then the crystal clear nights where you see the starry sky from a country perspective without the city clutter.
